Cleaning the Chesapeake memorial
The Cheasepeak Memorial on Southsea seafront is located between the Royal Naval Memorial and the Hovercraft Terminal - it is a corniced pedestal, consisting of a polished granite column on a square base with a foliate capital surmounted by a bronze tripod bearing the naval crown. The base of the column is decorated with bronze relief. Our team were tasked with clearing a Seagulls nest from the memorial once the seagulls had finished nesting and cleaning the excreta on the Chesapeake memorial.
Is your roof safe for contractors?
If you have a roof that needs to be accessed for cleaning and/ or maintenance you must ensure that it is compliant with current Health and Safety legislation.
Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, it is the legal duty and moral responsibility of those in control of rooftop work to do all that is reasonably practical to prevent anyone from falling.
This can be done in a number of ways with either collective protection or personal protection systems which, when installed must then be tested and maintained annually. At 1st Choice High Level Cleaning and Maintenance, we have over 20 years experience in fitting and testing both collective and personal protection systems.
At 1st Choice High Level Cleaning & Maintenance, we take safety very seriously. The safety of our team, our clients, and the public is of paramount importance to us as we are out on our cleaning jobs. That is why all our team members have been trained in all aspects of Health and Safety. On 6th April 2018, our team went to Meaningful Change at their Holiday Inn venue in Portsmouth to undertake First Aid training. The trainer Bob was brilliant and the guys want to thank him for a great day of training! First Aid training is so important it really can make the difference between life and death and we encourage everyone to undertake first aid training when the opportunity arises.

NAPO have produced a range of films aimed at highlighting important health and safety issues for employers. In their latest film they draw attention to the fact that European workers are ageing. By 2030, workers aged over 55 are expected to make up 30% or more of the total workforce in many EU countries. This creates challenges for employees, employers and businesses. Their latest film “Napo in… back to a healthy future” looks at issues around ageing and occupational safety and health, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and noise.
The film can be viewed here on the NAPO website
Thank you to everyone who bought a cake at Maritime House in Portsmouth last week in our Cakes4Commandos fundraiser in support of the Royal Marines Charity. The Royal Marines Charity supports both serving and veteran Marines and their families. Our photos didn’t come out brilliantly but we had some lovely feedback from the visitors asking if we’d be back before Christmas! Dawn did a tremendous job baking over 300 cakes and raising £161.11 for the Charity.

The milk bottle tops are not generally collected by local councils and therefore often end up in landfill. However these bottle tops can be recycled by specialist companies that granulate them, enabling them to be used to make items such as hard plastic garden toys for children like as slides or indeed more bottle tops.

We'd been involved for sometime working with Portsmouth City Council on cleaning their sensitive and historic buildings including Southsea Castle and so were delighted when asked to help with the cleaning of The Square Tower which dates back to 1494 and the bust of King Charles I. Portsmouth City Council Seafront Manager David Evans gives us his views on the project.
Battered by the elements since it was built in 1544, Southsea Castle is being cleaned by 1st Choice High Level Cleaning & Maintenance.
Visitors to one of the city's leading landmarks may have noticed that some of the historic walls are a different colour, as our specialist cleaners hanging on ropes with harnesses get to work with blasting the stonework with steam.

Not only do bird droppings cause a health hazard, being infested with disease-causing organisms, but they create slip hazards, are unsightly and can cause ongoing damage to the fabric of a building.
